EKO HOT BLOG reports that Wu Zetian, known as Empress Wu, was not only the first and only female emperor of China but also the wealthiest woman to have ever lived.
During her reign in the Tang Dynasty (624–705 AD), China controlled about 23% of the global economy, with her wealth in modern terms estimated at an astonishing £12 trillion, according to a report by SCMP.
In comparison, Elon Musk’s net worth is approximately £339 billion, while Bill Gates’ stands at £83 billion. Even combined, their wealth is still £11 trillion less than Empress Wu’s fortune.
Born in Shanxi Province in 624 AD, Wu came from a wealthy family with strong connections to the imperial court. At just 14 years old, she joined the palace of Emperor Taizong as a secretary, gaining the education and political experience that would later help her ascend to power.
After the death of Emperor Taizong, she became the concubine of his son and successor, Emperor Gaozong. Wu’s rise to power was controversial, initially ruling through others before forcing her son to abdicate and assuming the throne herself.
Once in power, Wu ruled with an iron fist, reshaping Chinese society by shifting power from military officials to scholars and fostering economic growth.
Though she was often accused of being ruthless, with links to several alleged purges and murders, Wu’s leadership was efficient, and she maintained control of the empire with remarkable skill.
