- Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai and Kashim Musa Tumsa have rejected the All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsement of Alhaji Baba Malam Wali as the consensus governorship candidate for 2027.
- Bomai characterized the endorsement as an “affront to democratic principles” and a “subversion of due process,” arguing against “elite arrangements” made behind closed doors.
- Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has backed the party’s decision, viewing it as a historic opportunity for Yobe North to produce a governor and urging his supporters to remain loyal to the party.
The Yobe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing a significant internal rift following the endorsement of former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the decision, reached during a meeting of the Critical Stakeholders’ Forum led by Governor Mai Mala Buni and Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, has triggered sharp reactions from high-profile aspirants.

Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai and Kashim Musa Tumsa have openly kicked against the move. In a statement released Thursday, Bomai condemned the culture of imposition, asserting that leadership must emerge through a “free, fair, and transparent choice” rather than the dictates of a few influential individuals.
He further vowed to resist the decision through lawful and democratic means to defend the rights of the people of Yobe.
Supporters of Kashim Musa Tumsa also expressed their rejection, noting that Tumsa was among the first to purchase the expression of interest form.

A close associate stated that the endorsement fails to reflect the spirit of internal democracy and ignored the transparent process expected by party members.
In contrast, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has accepted Wali’s emergence in good faith.
Lawan emphasized that politics must be guided by collective interest over personal ambition.
He highlighted that Wali’s candidacy represents a chance for the Yobe North Senatorial District to lead the state for the first time since its creation.
Lawan urged his supporters to remain calm and return to their wards with a message of party unity to ensure a successful 2027 campaign.
The APC stakeholders had previously resolved to use a consensus method for selecting candidates.
While the forum described Wali as a “seasoned technocrat” with the necessary qualifications for leadership, the vocal opposition from other aspirants suggests a challenging path toward total party consolidation ahead of the next election cycle.
