A new wave of young swimming talents will gather in Lagos on March 22, 2026, for the state’s annual trials at the Rowe Park Sports Complex.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the exercise, organised by the Lagos State Sports Commission, is designed to identify and groom athletes who will represent the state in upcoming national and international competitions.

The trials are open to male and female swimmers aged 16 and below, drawing participants from schools, clubs, and training centres across Lagos. For many of these young athletes, it’s a chance to showcase their skills and earn a spot on the state team.
Director General of the commission, Lekan Fatodu, said the initiative reflects Lagos’ commitment to building sports from the grassroots through structured and consistent talent discovery.
According to him, the trials are more than just a selection process they are part of a long-term plan to nurture athletes who can represent Lagos with pride on bigger stages.
Fatodu also highlighted the support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting that the administration continues to invest in youth development and sports infrastructure.
On her part, the Chairman of the Lagos State Aquatics Association, Aderoju Ope-Ajayi, described the trials as a key step in strengthening competitive swimming in the state.
She explained that the event will expose young swimmers to professional standards while giving them valuable competition experience.

Participants will compete across three age categories: 15–16 years, 13–14 years, and 12 years and below. Events lined up include freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly races, and relay competitions.
With strong participation expected, the trials promise to uncover the next generation of swimming stars in Lagos.
