President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the removal of Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, from the presidential pardon list.
Eko Hot Blog reports that this was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, President Tinubu directed that individuals convicted of grave crimes including homicide, kidnapping, drug trafficking, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal possession or trafficking of firearms be excluded from the list of those eligible for presidential clemency.

Onanuga added that the President’s decision aligns with his administration’s commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that mercy is not extended to offenders whose crimes have caused severe harm to society.
He also noted that those who were previously included in the old list of pardons would now have their sentences reviewed and possibly reduced, depending on the nature of their offences.
Further details on the revised pardon list are expected to be made public in due course.
