Confirming the development on Tuesday, the Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Daso, said the victims were trying to navigate a deep section of the river when the boat overturned.
“They were returning from the farm and attempted to cross a river near Ghung village. But due to the strong currents, their boat capsized in the deeper part of the river,” Daso said.
He added that police operatives and local divers recovered the bodies shortly after the incident.
“There were no marks of violence on the bodies. Photographs were taken for record purposes before they were evacuated to the General Hospital, Garkida, in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, being the nearest health facility,” he explained.

A security expert, Zagazola Makama, confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that a medical doctor at the hospital pronounced the mother and daughter dead on arrival. Their remains were later released to family members for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Daso further disclosed that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Maiduguri had commenced an investigation into the incident.
The tragedy adds to a growing number of boat accidents in the North-East region, where inadequate safety measures and rough water conditions continue to claim lives.
