Acting Chairman Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu presented the official handover documents to Professor Amupitan, describing the occasion as “a defining moment for the Commission and Nigeria’s democracy.”
She emphasized that his appointment comes at a critical period, as the Commission finalizes preparations for the Anambra State Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

“You are assuming office at a crucial time,” she said, noting that four National Commissioners were already in Anambra conducting readiness assessments. “The responsibilities ahead are immense. Elections are the backbone of democracy, and Nigerians are observing closely.”
Agbamuche-Mbu praised INEC’s staff as “highly skilled, patriotic, and dedicated public servants,” assuring Professor Amupitan of their support in carrying out his mandate.
During the ceremony, INEC directors, often described as the “generals on the field of election management,” were formally introduced, representing the 23 departments that drive the Commission’s nationwide operations.
A delegation from the University of Jos, Professor Amupitan’s alma mater, attended the ceremony, including the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Bursar, and Librarian. The new Chairman was accompanied by his wife, Professor Yemisi Amupitan, and their children.

In his inaugural address, Professor Amupitan expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment and committed to leading INEC with integrity, transparency, and discipline.
Highlighting the Anambra election as a key test, he called for unity among staff, urging them to “break down silos, foster collaboration, and ensure every voice is heard.”
He further emphasized the importance of staff welfare, stating, “We expect a lot from you, and in turn, we must be fair and responsive to your needs.”
Concluding his address, Professor Amupitan expressed confidence in the Commission’s ability to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, vowing to uphold electoral credibility and public trust.
