- The African Democratic Congress (ADC) caucus in the House of Representatives has called for the removal of INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), citing alleged partisan social media activity.
- Lawmakers accuse the commission of fueling internal party divisions by withdrawing recognition of Senator David Mark as the party’s authentic leader.
- The caucus also warned of a “collusion” between elements in the judiciary and INEC to influence a critical leadership case scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
The House of Representatives ADC caucus has formally requested that President Bola Tinubu sack and prosecute the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the demand, presented by caucus leader Afam Ogene in Abuja on Monday, follows allegations that the chairman’s neutrality has been compromised ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group claims that digital forensic investigations link Amupitan to a personal X (formerly Twitter) account that expressed support for the ruling APC and posted controversial content regarding national security.
According to the caucus, the credibility of the 2027 elections is at risk if Amupitan remains at the helm.
Beyond the social media allegations, the lawmakers expressed deep concern over INEC’s role in the ongoing ADC leadership crisis.
They alleged that the commission is intentionally destabilizing the party by reneging on its previous certification of Senator David Mark as the recognized leader.
By withdrawing this recognition and allowing a rival faction led by Nafiu Bala to gain ground, lawmakers argue INEC is effectively preventing the ADC from fielding candidates.
The crisis has now moved toward a legal showdown. The caucus alleged they have “credible information” suggesting that specific individuals within the judiciary are collaborating with INEC to influence a court ruling on the leadership question set for today, April 14.

In response, the lawmakers revealed plans to petition the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate and potentially remove “politically exposed” judicial officers who may be acting with partisan intent.
As the political temperature rises, the ADC lawmakers insist that the removal of Prof. Amupitan is the only way to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic process.
They maintained that the current leadership of the commission has abandoned its role as an impartial arbiter, choosing instead to interfere in the internal affairs of political parties to the detriment of inclusivity and fair play.
