Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has issued a firm warning to politicians plotting to manipulate the 2027 governorship election, declaring that any attempt to rig the poll “will be met with madness.” His remarks, captured in a viral video from a recent public gathering, have sparked wide discussion among residents and political observers.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Makinde, who emphasised that his administration is already preparing for transition, cautioned those hoping to exploit political tension to gain relevance. He stressed that voters in Oyo are now more politically aware and ready to defend their mandate. According to him, criticising his administration or fuelling propaganda will not translate into electoral advantage for opponents.
“In a few months, I will be out of here. I have already started preparations for the transition,” he said as quoted by Punch. “In 2027, other players will be there. If they think attacking Seyi Makinde and politicising this issue will make the people vote for them, maybe they should think again. Oyo State people are wiser.”
He warned that plans to rig the next election were doomed to fail, stating, “If you think you can rig the gubernatorial elections in Oyo State in 2027, think again. Were, la n fi wo were.”
Makinde has repeatedly maintained that the power to choose his successor belongs solely to the electorate. During a stakeholders’ consultative forum on the 2026 budget in Ibadan, he dismissed the idea that succession could be dictated by political entitlement.
“Oyo State has gone beyond the era of politics based on entitlement or propaganda. The decision of who becomes the next governor rests with all eligible voters in this state,” he said.
Speaking on his possible presidential ambition, Makinde noted during a visit to Fashola Farm in Oyo town that he is qualified to contest but will announce his decision at the appropriate time.

“I am capable of making my own decisions,” he said. “I will address the issue publicly when the time is right.”
