According to Premium Times, a source within the presidency said that Egbetokun was asked to resign during a meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
The development comes barely three weeks after Disu was deployed to head the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex at Alagbon, Lagos, on February 2, 2026. He assumed duty on February 9, making his potential elevation to IGP remarkably swift.
AIG Disu is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished police officers.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, he joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has spent over three decades building a reputation for professionalism, integrity, and results. He was promoted to AIG on March 25, 2025.
Disu’s most celebrated achievement remains his transformation of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) after his appointment in June 2015.
Under his leadership, the RRS became a model for proactive policing, earning the award for best anti-crime police squad in West Africa in 2016. During the 2020 End SARS protests, he demonstrated empathy by releasing ambulances to help protesters who needed medical care.

In August 2021, Disu was appointed to head the Force Intelligence Bureau Intelligence Response Team (FIB-IRT), replacing the controversial DCP Abba Kyari. Under his leadership, the IRT recorded significant successes, including the arrest of a fraud syndicate specialising in breaching bank accounts. The then IGP Usman Alkali Baba publicly commended his achievements in July 2022.
In November 2023, Disu became Commissioner of Police for Rivers State Command, before being redeployed to the Federal Capital Territory in October 2024. His tenure in Abuja was marked by aggressive crime-fighting, with his command overseeing the arrest of more than 1,000 criminals between October 2024 and March 2025.
AIG Disu holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language from Lagos State University, a Master of Science in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University (2010), and a Master of Science in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University (2022). He also possesses an Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence.
He has attended numerous professional courses including Small Arms Smuggling Training in Botswana and Internet Fraud Training at the University of Cambridge. He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the International Academy of Forensics, and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.
Outside policing, Disu is a Third Dan Black Belt in Judo who won a silver medal at the 33rd United States Open Judo Championship in 2022. He formerly chaired the Lagos State Judo Association.

IGP Egbetokun’s tenure, which began in June 2023, was marked by public criticism and controversy.
His handling of protests and security operations attracted allegations of human rights violations. There were also reports of scandals, including allegations involving his Principal Staff Officer and claims that ₦100 million from Anambra State’s security vote was traced to his son’s account.
At 59 years old, Disu represents what many Nigerians consider the finest of the Nigeria Police Force.
