A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his birthday, describing him as a statesman of historic significance.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the faction praised Obasanjo’s commitment to democracy and his role in Nigeria’s political evolution.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the statement read, “We celebrate a great believer in democracy and a statesman of historic significance. The first Military Head of State to voluntarily hand over power to a democratically elected administration.
“As the pioneer presidential candidate of our party and the first President of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, you played a pivotal role in consolidating democracy and stabilizing our republic at a critical moment in our national history.
“On this special occasion, we celebrate your service to the nation and wish you continued good health and a very happy birthday.”
Obasanjo was the first presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at its inception in 1998. He went on to serve two terms as president from 1999 to 2007 under the party’s platform.
Meanwhile, former Senate President Bukola Saraki also paid tribute to Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as “a living manuscript of the Nigerian story.”

In a message shared on his X account on Thursday, Saraki commended the former president’s enduring influence on Nigeria’s political and national development. He noted that Obasanjo’s life and legacy remain closely tied to the country’s historical journey.
