President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of Nigeria’s Compressed Natural Gas initiative to include electric vehicles, in a move aimed at driving cleaner and more affordable transportation across the country.

The expanded initiative will oversee both gas-powered and electric vehicle systems, including the rollout of infrastructure such as refuelling stations, vehicle conversion programmes, and electric vehicle charging networks nationwide.
Under the plan, the government will continue to promote the use of CNG as a cost-effective alternative fuel, leveraging Nigeria’s gas resources to reduce transportation costs, improve energy security, and conserve foreign exchange.
At the same time, the inclusion of electric vehicles is expected to push the country toward more environmentally friendly mobility options.
President Tinubu has also directed the leadership of the initiative to fast-track access to vehicle conversion kits, ensuring they are widely available and affordable for Nigerians. To support this, the programme will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria and financial institutions to create flexible financing options.

In addition, the President ordered the rapid deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to expand access to CNG, especially in areas where permanent infrastructure is still being developed.
The move signals a stronger push by the government to modernise Nigeria’s transport system, combining cost savings with sustainability as the country transitions toward cleaner energy solutions.
