- Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the 2023 APC governorship candidate and former deputy governor of Kano State, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
- The move follows a high-profile meeting with Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso and highlights a growing alliance between former political rivals in the state.
- In compliance with the Electoral Act, Gawuna recently stepped down from his role as Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria to focus on his 2027 aspirations.
Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Eko Hot Blog reports that Gawuna, who served as deputy governor under the Abdullahi Ganduje administration, received his membership card at his Gawuna Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area.

The registration ceremony was a major political event, attended by the National Leader of the ADC, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the immediate past deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo.
Thousands of supporters gathered to witness the transition, which solidifies a new power bloc in the North ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Gawuna expressed his commitment to strengthening the ADC, describing his exit from the APC as a voluntary and personal decision intended to allow him to contribute to a different political vision.
Gawuna’s defection comes on the heels of his resignation from the APC on March 29 and his subsequent departure from his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).
This resignation was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive for political appointees seeking elective office to step down. Gawuna had also previously served as Pro-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, and thanked the President for the opportunity to serve in those capacities.
During the 2023 elections, Gawuna finished second in a tightly contested race, polling 890,705 votes against Governor Abba Yusuf’s 1,019,602.

His move to the ADC, particularly alongside Kwankwaso, suggests a major recalibration of strategies among Kano’s political heavyweights.
Kwankwaso personally welcomed Gawuna to his residence earlier in the week, expressing optimism for their future collaboration on social media.
This development is part of a broader “defection tsunami” affecting the APC and NNPP in the region.
As key actors continue to shift alliances, the ADC is rapidly emerging as a formidable platform for those looking to challenge the current status quo in the 2027 cycle.
