The Cross River State Government has confirmed the isolation of a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital following a suspected case of COVID-19.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commissioner for Health, Henry Egbe Ayuk, disclosed on Tuesday that the patient is currently under close medical observation and receiving treatment.

According to him, the individual arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on March 17, 2026, before travelling to Calabar en route to a factory in Akamkpa Local Government Area, where symptoms were first noticed.
He said the case was immediately referred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where isolation protocols were activated and emergency response measures put in place.
“We have activated all necessary procedures, including contact tracing and isolation, to prevent further spread,” Ayuk said, noting that the state is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
Health officials assured residents that the situation is under control and urged the public to remain calm while authorities continue monitoring developments.

Also speaking, the World Health Organization coordinator in the state, Olatunde Yewande, alongside the State Epidemiologist, Inyang Ekpenyong, said surveillance systems have been strengthened to contain any possible spread.
They explained that COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2, can present symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, and breathing difficulties.
Residents were advised to maintain preventive measures, including proper hygiene, vaccination, and avoiding close contact with suspected cases, as early detection and isolation remain key to limiting transmission.
