President Bola Tinubu has said his support for the Dangote Refinery was driven by his commitment to encouraging greater private sector investment in Nigeria’s economy.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the President made the remarks on Thursday while receiving the board and management of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu revealed that his support for the refinery project began before he assumed office as president, recalling discussions he had with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari on how to ensure the project became a reality through private sector participation.
According to him, the refinery is a clear example of how private investment can drive economic growth and reduce the burden on government.
“We need to encourage the private sector to invest more in the economy. It’s one of the reasons I backed Dangote, even before I became president.
“God bless the soul of former President Muhammadu Buhari. We were talking about the refinery then, and we found a way to push it to the private sector,” Tinubu said.
The President also highlighted some of the economic reforms introduced by his administration since taking office on May 29, 2023.
He said the implementation of the naira-for-crude policy was aimed at stabilising the local currency and simplifying transactions by reducing the need for letters of credit and other paperwork.
Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s economic potential, insisting that the country’s population, talent and entrepreneurial spirit are enough to drive the economy to a $1 trillion size.
