A Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa has sentenced the State Commissioner of Police to prison for failing to comply with a court ruling.
The court’s decision stems from a 2016 judgment, later upheld by the Court of Appeal, favoring nine families of Yenizue-gene Community over a disputed parcel of land in Asam.

The land, currently serving as the operational base for the state security outfit “Operation Doo-Akpo,” was ruled to belong to the families, including the Fabiri, Ayoko, Aku, Ugbon, and Obediah families.
However, the police continued to occupy the property without their consent.
At a press briefing, the claimants’ lead counsel, Ukunbiriowei Saiyou, explained that despite multiple court rulings, the police refused to vacate the land or challenge the judgments.
He noted that the Commissioner of Police had been summoned since 2022 for contempt proceedings but failed to appear in court.
Presiding Judge, Justice R. Ajuwa, issued the imprisonment order on December 27, 2024, after formally addressing the committal application.
Saiyou urged the Inspector General of Police to intervene, ensuring compliance with the ruling or risk further legal action.
