Kenya: 'I'm Fully in Charge' Ruto Says
  • British national Edgar Charles Frederick, 79, was killed in a hit-and-run involving a vehicle from President Ruto’s motorcade in Nairobi.
  • The driver, part of the presidential convoy’s support team, was arrested but later released on bail pending investigation.
  • The incident has sparked debate over the size and speed of Kenya’s presidential motorcade, with concerns over past similar accidents.

A British national has died after being struck in a hit-and-run incident involving a vehicle in the motorcade of Kenyan President William Ruto.

The victim, identified as 79-year-old Edgar Charles Frederick, was fatally injured on Thursday when he was hit by a vehicle on a main road in the capital, Nairobi.

Kenyan police confirmed they had detained the driver responsible for the accident, but he has since been released on bail. Authorities stated that the vehicle in question was a support car travelling at the rear of President Ruto’s official convoy.

According to police reports, President Ruto’s main security detail had already passed through the area when the accident occurred. Police spokesman Michael Muchiri told the BBC that Mr. Frederick had been in Kenya visiting his sister and nephew, who are residents of the country.

Authorities have notified the victim’s next-of-kin, and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place later on Friday. Meanwhile, the driver, who failed to stop after the incident, is set to appear in court once investigations are complete.

The incident has sparked widespread debate and criticism on social media. While Kenyans are accustomed to roads being cleared for presidential motorcades, this case has raised concerns over the convoy’s size and the speed at which it was moving.

This is not the first time a pedestrian has been killed by a presidential or deputy presidential motorcade in Kenya. In previous incidents, even members of the president’s travelling entourage have lost their lives in such accidents. However, some observers believe this case has drawn heightened attention due to the victim being a foreign national.

A spokesperson for the UK High Commission in Kenya acknowledged awareness of the reports and stated that officials were seeking further information.

Videos circulating on social media show a man wearing blue jeans and a light-coloured shirt lying motionless on the road, bleeding, outside a busy shopping area. Other images depict his body covered with a traditional Maasai shuka, a checked shawl commonly worn in Kenya.

Police spokesman Michael Muchiri further clarified that the vehicle involved in the accident was part of the regional administration’s fleet, supporting the presidential motorcade.

On the same day as the fatal incident, President Ruto was holding political engagements in the vicinity of the scene as part of his ongoing public outreach efforts in Nairobi.
