Car pushes LASTMA official into lagoon, rescued by fishermen

An officer of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority(LASTMA), Kehinde Shonaike, narrowly escaped death, yesterday, after a fast moving car pushed him into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge.

The incident happened at about 11a.m., when the LASTMA officer was assisting the owner of a broken-down vehicle to fix it at Adekunle Junction end of the bridge.

According to an eyewitness, the victim was immediately rescued by fishermen, who sighted him when he was pushed into the lagoon.

Confirming the incident, General Manager (LASTMA), Wale Musa, said the vehicle hit the officer was moving at an uncontrollable speed and in the process hit the officer.

In an interview Shonaike said he could not explain how he found himself in the lagoon, but all he could remember was activities before and after the accident.

He said: “I was on my daily routine, which is to ensure free flow of traffic on Third Mainland Bridge. During my patrol, I saw a broken down vehicle on the bridge. I parked to assist him to prevent possible traffic gridlock.

“While doing that, the next thing was a loud sound and all I could remember was that I met myself in the lagoon.

“Though, I can swim but I have not engaged in swimming in a lagoon before. Few minutes later, luck shone on me. Some fishermen came and rescued me.

“When I saw myself in the water, the thought of not being able to return home enveloped me because I had promised to see my mother after work.”
