Speaking during an interview with journalists in Abeokuta on Wednesday, Abiodun stated that the decision was aimed at ensuring equitable distribution of federal educational institutions across the state and attracting more funding to elevate TASUED into a model center of academic excellence.
“When I assumed office, I pledged to be fair, just, and equitable. Considering the distribution of federal institutions, it became clear that it was necessary to have a federal university in Ogun East,” he said.

Abiodun noted that establishing new federal institutions from scratch is financially demanding for the government. This prompted his administration to propose that the Federal Government adopt TASUED, a leading university in Ogun East, to bridge the gap.
He explained that the proposal was presented to the Federal Government in July 2024 through the Minister of Education. After thorough evaluation, the President approved the takeover.
“This move was intentional and well-planned. We requested it, and Mr. President, in his generosity, approved the adoption of this prestigious institution,” Abiodun added.
The governor assured the Federal Government that they were inheriting a first-class institution, which his administration had consistently supported and nurtured since 2019.
Abiodun paid tribute to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who championed free education in the old Western Region, and Dr. Tai Solarin, after whom the university is named. He emphasized that their legacies of educational advancement inspired the decision.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, described the takeover as a significant milestone that would provide the university with increased access to federal funding, better infrastructure, and expanded academic opportunities.
“The takeover will enhance the university’s capacity for research and educational development through additional resources from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND),” Arigbabu said.
