In an interview with Eko Hot Blog on Thursday, June 13, 2024, Mr. Hassan Olayemi, the chairman of the Kara Oke Oyinbo Epe, highlighted the unprecedented price hikes.
“We are finding it hard to make a profit of even ₦10,000 on a ram that we purchase for ₦800,000 from the North,” he lamented.

The high cost of transportation to bring the rams to Epe further exacerbates the situation.
“Transportation expenses have skyrocketed, making it difficult to maintain reasonable prices,” Olayemi added.
Other ram sellers, including Abubakar Muhammad and Mukaila Hamod, echoed Olayemi’s concerns.
They noted that the increased costs of livestock and transportation have severely impacted their ability to sell rams at affordable prices, leading to dwindling sales and slim profit margins.
On the buyers’ side, the discontent is palpable. Mr. Azeez Olakoju, Mr. Damilare Aina, Mrs. Ajoke Ogunlaja, and Mr. Yusuf, all regular customers, expressed their frustration over the steep prices.
“The money that bought three rams last year can barely purchase one big ram this year,” Aina explained.
They urged the government to intervene, highlighting that the economic situation is tightening for everyone, and money is not circulating as it used to.
Mrs. Ogunlaja shared her disappointment, stating that, “Things are too tight. We can hardly afford the basics, let alone a ram for the festival. The government needs to address this issue urgently.”
The escalating prices are attributed to a combination of factors, including increased transportation costs due to fuel price hikes, insecurity in the northern regions affecting supply chains, and general economic inflation.
As the Eid al-Adha celebrations draw near, the call for government intervention grows louder.
The residents of Epe hope that measures will be taken to alleviate the financial burden and ensure that the tradition of celebrating with family and friends is not marred by economic hardships.
Government Response
In response to these concerns, local government representatives have acknowledged the issue and assured the public that steps are being taken to address the situation.
“We are aware of the challenges faced by both sellers and buyers,” a government spokesperson said.
“Efforts are underway to reduce transportation costs and stabilize prices. We are also working on policies to ensure better economic conditions for our citizens.”
As the community awaits tangible solutions, the hope is that relief will come soon, allowing the people of Epe to celebrate Eid al-Adha with joy and without undue financial strain.
