According to the prosecution, the deceased came from a wealthy family, and her husband allegedly saw her death as a means of gaining access to her assets and inheritance.
The suspect was arraigned before Magistrate Sadiya Zakirai on a charge bordering on culpable homicide under the laws of Kano State.
During the proceedings, prosecuting counsel Aisha Habibu Hassan told the court that the offence is a capital one and carries severe punishment under the law if proven.

She explained that the prosecution needed additional time to obtain legal advice from the State Ministry of Justice due to the seriousness of the allegations and the possibility of transferring the matter to the High Court, which has jurisdiction over capital offences.
The court subsequently granted the request and ordered that Suleiman remain in custody pending further legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The matter was adjourned for further mention.
The prosecution told the court that the circumstances surrounding Maryam’s death raised suspicion from the outset, alleging that the act was carefully planned shortly after the wedding.
Family members of the deceased, who attended the court session, were said to have expressed grief and shock over the incident, describing Maryam as a young woman whose life was cut short in tragic circumstances.
If the case is eventually transferred to the High Court and the suspect is convicted, he could face life imprisonment or capital punishment under the law.
