Lagos Govt Commences Subsidized Food Markets Today

EKO HOT BLOG reports in a bid to alleviate the economic strain on its citizens, the Lagos State Government (LASG) is set to launch subsidized food markets across all local government areas in the state, following engagements with the Ministry of Agriculture.
Starting from today Sunday, March 17, 2024, residents will have access to essential food items at discounted rates, thanks to LASG’s commitment to subsidize 25% of the total cost.

The markets will exclusively operate on Sundays, offering a range of basic food items including beans, bread, rice, garri, eggs, onions, and pepper.
Key modalities have been outlined to ensure the smooth operation of the subsidized markets:
– Payment System: Only electronic payment methods will be accepted, with no cash transactions allowed. Beneficiaries will pay 75% of the total cost using ATM cards or Cowry Cards, while LASG will directly cover the remaining 25% through payments to the vendors.
– Product Limits: Each beneficiary will be limited to purchasing a maximum of 2 loaves of bread to ensure fair distribution and prevent hoarding.
– Market Operations: The markets will open from 11am to 2pm, with vendors required to set up before the commencement time at 9am. Canopies, tables, and pallets will be provided at each location for vendors’ convenience.
– Security Measures: Maximum security will be ensured by a combined team of Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and Civil Defence personnel to safeguard vendors and beneficiaries.
– Duration: While the exact duration of the project is yet to be determined, it is expected to run for a minimum of 4 weeks.
Additional measures include the provision of banners displaying available products and prices at the entrance of each location, as well as ongoing engagements with LASG to further refine the initiative before its commencement.
LASG’s initiative aims to provide much-needed relief to residents grappling with rising living costs, ensuring access to essential food items at affordable prices.
