President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to immediately deploy 100,000 kits for the conversion of petrol-powered vehicles and tricycles to gas as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs in Nigeria.

The Executive Director of PiCNG, Ismael Ahmed, disclosed this while speaking with journalists after a closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ahmed said the President sought updates on efforts by the initiative to expand access to gas-powered mobility and alternative energy options across the country.
“The President, as usual, is always trying to get updates on what is going on, especially with the war in the Middle East and the rising cost of petrol and diesel. He wanted to know what we are doing at PiCNG and with electric vehicles to scale up the availability of gas and CNG nationwide so that transportation costs for Nigerians can be reduced,” Ahmed said.

He added that the President had mandated the immediate rollout of about 100,000 conversion kits through collaboration with various stakeholders.
According to him, the deployment is expected to enable large-scale conversion of vehicles and tricycles within the next few weeks.
Ahmed also disclosed that the President directed the fast-tracking of infrastructure for gas refuelling, compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicle charging across the country, particularly along the Northern Corridor.
He noted that the initiative plans to establish refuelling stations along major routes including Lokoja, Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria, Kano and Maiduguri to improve access to CNG.
Ahmed further revealed that the government is working with local and international manufacturers interested in establishing assembly lines in Nigeria as part of efforts to promote job creation and expand the adoption of alternative mobility technologies.
He added that the initiative is also collaborating with the Rural Electrification Agency to provide solar-powered charging solutions for electric vehicles, particularly in off-grid areas.
