Lassa Fever Outbreak: 12 Dead, 112 Confirmed Cases in Ondo State

No fewer than 12 people have died from 112 confirmed cases of Lassa fever in Ondo State, according to the Acting Statistician-General, Olusola Ajayi.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that speaking in Akure while addressing workers of the state’s waste management authority, Ajayi described the situation as alarming and urged immediate action to curb the spread of the disease.

He called on waste management officials to collaborate with health sector stakeholders to ensure a cleaner environment, stressing that proper sanitation is crucial in reducing the outbreak.

“We are in this together, and we must act fast. In Ondo State today, there are 353 reported cases of Lassa fever, with 112 confirmed and 12 deaths recorded. If we want to act, the time is now,” he said.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) recently reported 143 confirmed cases out of 484 suspected Lassa fever infections across 32 local government areas in seven states from December 30, 2024, to January 12, 2025. The Centre also recorded 22 deaths, with a fatality rate of 15.4%.

Similarly, last week, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Adeniran Ikuomola, disclosed that Ondo State had recorded nearly 400 suspected cases since the latest outbreak.

“We have 400 suspected cases and 100 confirmed. While I cannot give an exact figure of deaths, we have recorded several fatalities,” he stated.
