EKO HOT BLOG reports that the directive, issued by Air Commodore UU. Idris, Air Component Commander of the operation, stems from rising security threats posed by unauthorized drone activities in the region.
In a signal obtained by Daily Trust, Idris raised alarms over the unregulated use of drones by both government agencies and private individuals, warning that such operations could lead to serious security risks, especially with the potential misuse by non-state actors and criminal elements.
He emphasized that drones, increasingly used for both domestic and commercial purposes, could be exploited for subversive and offensive activities, heightening the threat to military and critical national infrastructure (CNI).
Idris also referenced global incidents where drones were employed against military targets, underlining the risks their unauthorized use poses in the region.
The ban comes after a January 7, 2025, incident where a passenger on an NGO flight from Maiduguri to Monguno was found with a drone during a search at the helipad. The drone was seized, and an investigation is currently ongoing.
“This event, along with other reported sightings of drones in the theatre, highlights the increasing unauthorized drone operations in the region,” the Air Component Commander stated.
Operation Hadin Kai is responsible for overseeing and regulating all aerial platform activities, including aircraft and drones, within the North East, aiming to deconflict the airspace and ensure the safety and security of all operators in the BAY states.
