Participants, dressed in eye-catching and elaborate costumes, moved through the streets in a lively procession filled with music, dance, and theatrical displays.
This year’s celebration, themed “A Homecoming of Heritage,” pays tribute to the historical influence of Afro-Brazilian returnees, known as the Aguda, whose cultural legacy introduced carnival traditions to Lagos in the 19th century.

At the main venue, performers delivered energetic displays featuring richly decorated outfits, rhythmic drumming, and coordinated dance routines rooted in Yoruba culture.
The event also showcased storytelling elements that reflect the history and identity of the participating communities.
Beyond its cultural significance, the carnival is seen as a key driver of tourism and creative enterprise, providing opportunities for artists, performers, and small businesses across the state.
To ensure smooth operations, security personnel were deployed across strategic points, while traffic was restricted on major roads around the venue to manage the large turnout.
Speaking on behalf of the Lafiaji community, Mayegun Musi Owolabi described the carnival as a vital tradition that preserves history and strengthens communal bonds.

He noted that preparations for this year’s event were extensive, reflecting the community’s dedication to sustaining its cultural heritage.
He added that the festival promotes unity and peaceful coexistence, while also serving as a platform for showcasing traditions passed down through generations.
With its blend of history, colour, and celebration, the Fanti Carnival continues to highlight Lagos’ rich cultural diversity and its enduring connection to the Afro-Brazilian diaspora.
