Residents Flee Zamfara Villages as Bandits Impose N172.7m Levy, Bags of Soybeans

Gunmen, allegedly led by notorious bandit leader Danisuhu, have reportedly imposed a N172.7 million levy on 25 villages in the Tsafe West Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the gunmen have also demanded in-kind contributions, including bags of soybeans, and threatened violence against those who fail to comply. Th forcing hundreds of residents to abandon their homes and livelihoods out of fear of violent reprisals.
According to a report by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the affected villages are facing crippling financial demands.

For example, Gijinzama is required to pay N8.5 million, Dakolo must pay N5 million and provide 20 bags of soybeans, and other villages like Gunja, Kauyen Kane, and Kurar Mota have varying amounts due, some reaching as high as N20 million for Kunchin Kalgo.
Local sources described the situation as dire, stating that the inability to meet these demands often results in brutal attacks by the bandits, leaving the villagers with no choice but to flee.

Although there have been some improvements in security along the Funtua-Tsafe axis and in Tsafe town, these efforts have not yet reached the rural villages of Tsafe West.
The displaced residents have called for additional security personnel and permanent posts in the area, alongside emergency relief to help those affected.
