Nwoko attributed his decision to the persistent and irreconcilable divisions within the PDP.
“The deep factions in the party have made it impossible to unite and work towards the collective interest of our people,” he stated in his resignation letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 8, Aniocha North Local Government Area.
Highlighting the internal strife in the party, Nwoko pointed to a recent incident on January 29, where PDP functionaries reportedly engaged in a physical altercation due to factional disputes.
“The party’s structure in our state is no longer conducive to achieving the promises I made to my constituents,” he said.
Nwoko expressed gratitude to the PDP for providing him the platform to contest the 2022/2023 senatorial election, which allowed him to engage directly with the people of Delta North.
However, he emphasized that his allegiance lies with fulfilling his commitments to his constituents. “I made actionable promises during my campaign, and I take these commitments seriously as a servant of the people,” he added.
The senator’s defection to the APC marks a significant political shift in Delta politics, as Nwoko has been a long-standing member of the PDP since its inception in 1999.
His departure is seen as a blow to the PDP in Delta State, especially considering his influence and prominence.
Nwoko reassured his constituents that his move to the APC is rooted in his desire to better serve their interests and fulfill his campaign promises.
“While I bid farewell to the PDP, I remain committed to statesmanship, unity, and the advancement of Delta North. My decision is in the best interest of those I serve,” he concluded.
