Eko Hot Blog reports that the advocacy meeting, held at the Council Secretariat in Igando Oloja, brought together royal fathers, community leaders, market stakeholders, and residents to deliberate on the importance of environmental cleanliness and collective responsibility.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Isiaka Yusuf Olatunji, described the initiative as a welcome development by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, aimed at restoring environmental discipline across communities.
He emphasized that the sanitation exercise will now hold every last Saturday of the month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., urging all residents to actively participate. He called on traditional rulers, Baales, and market leaders to mobilize their people and ensure proper disposal of waste through accredited agencies such as PSP operators, LAWMA, and other approved waste collectors.
In his remarks, the Supervisor for Environmental Services and Waste Management, Hon. Ogungbo Temitope Sofwan, stressed the need for strict adherence to environmental laws. He warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on walkways, road junctions, and drainage channels, as well as the burning and burying of waste, describing such acts as punishable offences.
He further disclosed that an Environmental Task Force has been established to enforce compliance, noting that offenders will face sanctions without interference. Monitoring teams, alongside sanitation officers, will conduct regular inspections across key areas including Abijo, Iberekodo, Orimedu, Akodo, Eputu, Awoyaya, Bogije, Baba-Adisa, GRA, Ogunfayo, and other parts of the local government.
The council also announced plans to clamp down on illegal street trading and activities obstructing public spaces, particularly along major walkways and markets.
The meeting featured an interactive session where stakeholders asked questions and received clarifications on sanitation guidelines and enforcement measures.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Adewale Fasali Adebanjo; Head of Department, Environmental Services, Mr. Lagbalu Adesegun; Supervisor for Market and Revenue, Hon. Ajibola Elemoro; Supervisor for Infrastructure, Housing and Tourism, Hon. Fatai Alonge; Supervisor for Agriculture, Hon. Olusola Edalere; as well as traditional rulers, market leaders, and residents.
The sensitization programme underscores the council’s commitment to environmental sustainability, public health, and community-driven development.
