Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Manila on Friday, calling for the impeachment of Philippines Vice President Sara Duterte over allegations of misconduct and misuse of government funds.
Demonstrators held placards and chanted “Impeach! Impeach Sara now!” as they gathered in the capital. Authorities estimated around 4,000 people participated in the protest, with security forces deploying 7,400 riot police to maintain order.

The demonstration follows a larger rally earlier this month, led by a conservative sect that opposes Duterte’s impeachment. Calls for her removal date back to December, when three impeachment complaints were filed against her, accusing her of misappropriating millions of dollars while serving as education secretary under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
With Congress set to adjourn next week ahead of the May midterm elections, lawmakers have yet to act on the complaints. Representative Percival Cendana, a supporter of one of the impeachment filings, urged his colleagues to act swiftly, warning that delays “condone impunity, abuse of power, and harassment” by Duterte.
For impeachment to advance, it must gain the support of at least one-third of the House of Representatives. If approved, Duterte could be removed from office by a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate.
“The Filipino people are here, ready to stand for truth and justice. Let’s not fail them,” Cendana told reporters.
However, a pro-Duterte rally, which reportedly drew 1.5 million supporters, has cast doubt on whether Congress will take action before the elections. The House Secretary General has indicated that lawmakers may wait for a potential fourth complaint before referring the case to the Speaker.
Duterte, 46, remains the constitutional successor to President Marcos despite their political fallout. She has denied all allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated.

Since her split with Marcos Jr. last year, Duterte has made incendiary remarks against the president, First Lady, and Speaker, even allegedly threatening them with assassination. In October, she described her relationship with Marcos as “toxic” and admitted to sometimes imagining “beheading” him.
Marcos and Duterte initially campaigned on a platform of unity in the 2022 elections, but their rift has widened significantly.
Despite the growing political tension, Marcos has urged Congress to drop the impeachment effort, calling it a “storm in a teacup” that would only distract lawmakers from their legislative duties.
