Vice President Kashim Shettima has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intentionally kept the decision to remove petrol subsidy away from public disclosure in his inaugural speech, describing it as a carefully guarded policy choice meant to avoid external pressure.
Eko Hot Bloggathered that Shettima made the remark on Friday during a courtesy visit by state governors to the President at his Lagos residence, held to mark the Eid el-Kabir celebrations and the administration’s third anniversary.

According to him, the President had already resolved on the subsidy removal before assuming office but deliberately left it out of his address so as not to face attempts to alter or discourage the decision.
“The withdrawal of the fuel subsidy was not included in your speech. It was a deliberate and strategic omission,” Shettima was quoted as saying.
He explained that Tinubu’s action reflected firm conviction, noting that the decision was not taken casually but was the result of prior consideration and resolve.
Shettima further praised the President’s leadership style, describing it as bold, forward-looking, and driven by a willingness to take difficult but necessary decisions.

He also defended the administration’s economic reforms, arguing that Tinubu inherited a weakened system that required deep structural changes rather than surface-level adjustments.
According to him, the government chose to confront long-standing economic challenges head-on instead of postponing reforms that were necessary for national recovery.
He added that the administration’s approach represents a deliberate effort to rebuild the economy and reposition the country for long-term stability.
In the same gathering, Governors under the Progressive Governors’ Forum reportedly commended the President’s performance, with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma stating that the administration had restored stability and prevented economic collapse.
