In a statement on Saturday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the government would end what she described as the “golden ticket” for asylum seekers. Under current rules, refugees are granted five years of protection before becoming eligible for indefinite leave to remain and later citizenship. The new policy cuts that protection period to 30 months.
According to the Home Office, refugee status will now undergo regular reviews, and individuals will be required to return to their home countries once those countries are considered safe. The ministry further revealed that refugees granted asylum will have to wait 20 years before applying for long-term residency, a major shift from the existing five-year pathway.
Officials described the package of measures as the largest overhaul of the UK asylum policy in modern times.
Starmer’s government has struggled to contain public frustration over migrant crossings in small boats from France, an issue that also challenged past Conservative administrations. More than 39,000 people have arrived via these dangerous routes this year, already surpassing the total number recorded in 2024, though still below the record numbers seen in 2022.
The surge in crossings has contributed to the rising popularity of Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, which has maintained significant polling momentum throughout the year.
Meanwhile, asylum applications in the UK have reached historic levels, with 111,000 claims submitted in the year to June 2025, according to official data.
