Mustapha’s decision follows a high-level meeting of the Yobe APC Critical Stakeholders’ Forum held on April 23, 2026.
The meeting, convened by Governor Mai Mala Buni and the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, resulted in a unanimous agreement among party leaders regarding the state’s political succession.
“To exercise the spirit of integrity and responsibility, I hereby formally withdraw from the contest for the APC governorship ticket,” Mustapha stated.
He further clarified that he is not contesting for the senatorial ticket, instead pledging his full support for Governor Buni to seek the Yobe East seat.
The Senator expressed deep gratitude to both Buni and Gaidam, noting that their mentorship allowed him to serve in various high-ranking roles, including as a commissioner and Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Scholarship Board.

As part of his withdrawal, Mustapha directed his campaign teams and social media administrators to immediately cease promotional activities or redirect their platforms to support official APC candidates.
He also extended congratulations to Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, the former Secretary to the State Government, who has emerged as the party leadership’s preferred candidate to succeed Buni as governor.
The lawmaker urged his supporters to align with the party’s decision to ensure unity and victory in the forthcoming 2027 elections.
