In an exclusive interview with Ekohotblog, Alhaja Giwa expressed concern over the rising cost of goods, revealing that prices have increased by more than three times compared to last year.
“The economy has changed drastically, and the prices of goods have skyrocketed. What we used to buy for a thousand naira last year is now priced at three thousand or more. It is important for people to understand this reality,” she explained.
Alhaja Giwa further advised individuals not to overextend themselves, especially in a time of economic uncertainty. “We must manage what we have wisely,” she stressed. “This festive period should not be about excessive spending but about appreciating the gift of life. We should be thankful for what we have and trust that things will get better.”
Echoing her sentiments, several market women expressed similar concerns about the economic challenges.
Mrs. Rukayat, a trader in the market, remarked, “I have noticed that the price of rice, palm oil, and other staples has risen dramatically. We must live within our means and prioritize what is essential.” She added that many of her fellow traders have also experienced a reduction in customer turnout due to the high cost of goods.
Another market woman, Mrs. Amina, shared that many customers now buy smaller quantities due to the increased prices. “We are all affected,” she said. “Everyone is feeling the pressure, but we must remain hopeful and support each other through this difficult time.”
As the festive season approaches, the voices of market women and community leaders like Alhaja Giwa serve as a timely reminder to be cautious with finances and to focus on the blessings of life rather than material excess.
“In times like these, we must remember that life itself is the greatest gift we have,” said Mrs. Rukayat. “It’s not about how much we spend, but about how much we appreciate the simple things and the people around us.”
