The Nigerian Railway Corporation has disclosed that at least 20 individuals were arrested in 2025 for vandalising railway infrastructure across the country, raising concerns over the safety and reliability of rail transport for everyday commuters.

Speaking on the development, the NRC’s spokesperson, Callistus Unyimadu, explained that cases of vandalism are handled by the Railway Police Command, noting that arrests are often dependent on incidents being properly reported and documented.
He added that offenders are prosecuted once sufficient evidence is established, stressing that those found guilty face jail terms.
Recent cases highlight the growing concern. In Bauchi State, security operatives intercepted a truck transporting vandalised railway tracks hidden under bags of chicken feed, leading to the arrest of five suspects.

Similarly, in Ebute-Metta, a suspect was arrested at a train station after allegedly being found with railway components removed from the tracks.
For many Nigerians who rely on train services, such incidents pose risks to safety and service delivery, with authorities warning that continued vandalism could lead to disruptions and increased costs.
The NRC has reiterated its commitment to protecting rail infrastructure and urged the public to report suspicious activities, emphasising that safeguarding the railway system is a shared responsibility.
