Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck reportedly suffered brake failure while speeding, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle first struck a LASTMA officer who was on duty controlling traffic at the roundabout. It also hit a pedestrian at the same spot before continuing for about 200 metres and knocking down another person.
Sadly, all three victims sustained fatal injuries.
The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash but was later apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to the police for further investigation.
Emergency responders, including LASTMA personnel, the police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, quickly arrived at the scene. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed them dead.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the loss as heartbreaking, especially as the officer died while carrying out his official duties. He noted that the incident highlights the serious risks traffic officers face daily on Lagos roads.
Bakare-Oki also renewed calls for stricter safety checks and enforcement for haulage and logistics companies, stressing that mechanical failures particularly faulty brakes remain a leading cause of deadly road accidents in the state.
The truck involved in the accident has been impounded and taken to the Badagry Police Division for forensic examination.
LASTMA said it would work closely with relevant agencies to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future. The Lagos State Government also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening vehicle monitoring systems, improving emergency response, and promoting road safety awareness across the state.
