A former African Democratic Congress (ADC) chairmanship aspirant in Imo State, Collins Osuagwu, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider any intention of running for president in 2027, advising him to instead back a younger contender in the interest of national stability.
In an open letter, Osuagwu appealed to Atiku to shift into a statesman role rather than pursue another presidential ambition, Eko Hot Blog gathered.

He noted that after several attempts at the presidency dating back to 1992, continued bids may no longer reflect the country’s current political landscape.

He argued that stepping aside would demonstrate wisdom and help shape a lasting legacy.
Osuagwu acknowledged Atiku’s long-standing political career and contributions to public service, including his tenure as vice president from 1999 to 2007, which he said cemented his influence in Nigeria’s political history.
He also referenced Atiku’s recent public appearance, where he was described as being in good health, suggesting it presents an opportunity to transition into elder statesmanship.
The ADC chieftain further pointed to evolving political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections, highlighting issues such as zoning and the growing call for generational change.
He identified Peter Obi as a figure gaining momentum, particularly in the southern region, with increasing grassroots support and perceived electoral strength.

Osuagwu cautioned that presenting both a northern presidential candidate and a northern party chairman could revive internal tensions similar to those previously experienced within the Peoples Democratic Party.
He warned that another unsuccessful presidential bid could impact Atiku’s legacy, while stepping aside could elevate him to a unifying national figure.
According to him, any decision by Atiku to contest again would carry significant consequences, not only for his personal reputation but also for Nigeria’s democratic future, urging him to act in what he described as the best interest of the country.
