Fernandes also contributed eight league goals, playing a key role in helping Manchester United finish third in the table and qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League under manager Michael Carrick.
The 31-year-old becomes the first Manchester United player to receive the honour since Nemanja Vidic won it during the 2010–11 season.

He beat several top performers to the award, including David Raya, Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice, Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo, Igor Thiago, and Morgan Gibbs-White.
Fernandes had earlier been recognised by the Football Writers’ Association as the Footballer of the Year, adding another major individual honour to his season.
Meanwhile, Nico O’Reilly of Manchester City was named the Premier League Young Player of the Season following an impressive breakthrough year.

The 21-year-old impressed in multiple positions, featuring mainly at left-back while also operating in midfield. He ended the season with five goals and three assists.
O’Reilly was particularly influential in Manchester City’s League Cup final triumph over Arsenal in March, where he scored both goals, and he also featured in the club’s FA Cup final victory against Chelsea.
Other nominees for the Young Player award included Rayan Cherki, Mateus Fernandes, Lewis Hall, Michael Kayode, Kobbie Mainoo, Alex Scott, and Eli Junior Kroupi.
