The National Democratic Congress has approved the use of direct primaries for State Assembly elections ahead of its upcoming party primaries.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the decision was reached on Wednesday following what the party described as extensive consultations involving members of the National Working Committee, the Selection Committee and other key stakeholders.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the meeting was attended by National Chairman Moses Cleopas, presidential aspirant Peter Obi and other senior party officials.
According to the statement, the party also adopted the report submitted by its screening committee chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor Sam Egwu.

The committee reportedly completed nearly one week of screening aspirants from across the country before presenting its findings to the leadership.
The party commended the committee for what it described as professionalism, dedication and commitment throughout the screening exercise.
The NDC further announced that all aspirants who purchased Expression of Interest forms would be allowed to participate in the primaries within their constituencies due to time constraints and consultations with stakeholders.
It explained that successful aspirants would later proceed to the party’s national secretariat for documentation, payment of nomination fees and other formal processes.

The statement also disclosed that the party had deployed primary election teams made up of senior officials and experienced administrators to all states to supervise the exercise alongside local party leaders and stakeholders.
According to the party, State Assembly primaries will be conducted through direct voting at constituency level, while primaries and affirmations for House of Representatives, Senate, governorship and presidential positions will hold at local government headquarters.
The party added that final results from the exercises would be announced at the national secretariat by the Selection Committee and the National Executive Committee.
The NDC also encouraged aspirants to embrace consensus arrangements where possible in the interest of party unity, stability and democratic growth.
