The group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON is nearing completion, with the 16 teams that will feature in the knockout phase now confirmed, despite a few remaining group matches.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the tournament, hosted in Morocco, kicked off with 24 nations drawn into six groups of four. At the end of the group phase, the top two teams from each group, alongside the four best third placed sides, advanced to the Round of 16, scheduled to begin on January 3.
Several of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses progressed without difficulty. Hosts Morocco, record champions Egypt, and Nigeria all topped their respective groups to secure early qualification for the knockout rounds.
The group stage also produced a historic breakthrough, as Tanzania qualified for the AFCON knockout stage for the first time. The East African side sealed their passage after holding Tunisia to a 1 1 draw, a result that ensured both teams progressed.
With qualification now settled, attention shifts to the knockout rounds, where competition is expected to intensify and errors could prove costly.
