The National Association of Nigerian Students has elected Akinteye Babatunde as its new national president following the association’s 2026 convention held at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Babatunde, a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology and former Senate President of NANS, emerged victorious after a closely contested election involving five candidates.

He succeeds Olushola Oladoja, who completed his tenure as the association’s leader.

The election was conducted under tight security, with personnel from the police and the Department of State Services deployed to the venue. Participants described the exercise as peaceful and free from disruptions.
Speaking after his victory, Babatunde appreciated delegates for their support and pledged to continue the achievements of the outgoing administration.
He also promised to promote unity among students nationwide and assured members that his leadership would prioritise student welfare and remain active in addressing issues affecting campuses across the country.
The new president described the convention as one of the most peaceful in the history of the association, noting that the process was free of violence and disagreements, with other contestants accepting the outcome.
Oladoja, in his remarks, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election and voiced confidence in Babatunde’s ability to lead the association successfully.

According to the chairperson of the Independent Convention Planning Committee, over 300 delegates participated in the election.
The delegates included student union representatives from tertiary institutions across the country, while contestants in the presidential race came from Federal University Oye Ekiti, Federal University of Technology Akure, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.
