Akpabio provided a rare insight into Mpigi’s political journey, noting that his decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC was driven by a shared vision for national development and the visible impact of the current National Assembly leadership.
Senator Mpigi, who passed away in February 2026, was a key figure in the Senate, particularly in his role overseeing the nation’s road infrastructure.
Akpabio emphasized that Mpigi’s contributions to legislative debates and project inspections were invaluable, noting that his dedication to Nigeria remained steadfast until his final moments. “Senator Mpigi was like a brother to me,” Akpabio remarked, stressing that the entire Senate moved as a unified body to support the bereaved family and the people of Tai Local Government Area.
A significant moment during the service was Akpabio’s formal request to the Mpigi family for a dedicated day of tribute in the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly.

Due to the Senate being on recess during the initial burial notification, the leadership is eager to fulfill the tradition of closing both the Senate and the House of Representatives for a day to honor a sitting member.
“Even in death, he is still serving Nigeria,” Akpabio stated, urging the family to allow the legislature this final opportunity to pay their respects to a man of strong character and advocacy.
The family, represented by Venerable Muele Mpigi, expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from the FCT Minister, the church, and fellow lawmakers.
In a gesture that underscored the Senate’s respect for the late lawmaker’s legacy, a N50 million donation was announced for the upkeep of the church building, which was a project dear to Senator Mpigi’s heart.
As the community bids farewell to one of its most influential sons, the focus now shifts to the upcoming national honors in Abuja, where the political and legislative weight of Barry Mpigi’s career will be officially memorialized.
