First major test looms as 2027 elections draw closer
Nigeria’s newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, is stepping into office at a time when public confidence in the country’s electoral process is at an all-time low. His appointment, confirmed by the National Council of State, has drawn mixed reactions from political parties and analysts, many of whom believe his performance will define the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that at 58, Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and law professor at the University of Jos, inherits an electoral system grappling with allegations of bias, irregularities, and voter apathy. While President Bola Tinubu described him as a man of integrity and apolitical standing, opposition figures have urged him to prove his independence through action, not words.
The Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress cautioned Amupitan to remain loyal to the Nigerian people and not political interests, stressing the need for sweeping reforms to rebuild trust. Labour Party’s Peter Obi also challenged him to begin with comprehensive electoral reform, saying Nigerians would judge him by his ability to act above partisan pressure.
The ruling All Progressives Congress, however, expressed optimism, stating that Amupitan was appointed on merit and must consolidate ongoing electoral reforms.

Observers say Amupitan’s first major challenge will be restoring confidence in INEC ahead of the off-cycle governorship elections and the 2027 general polls. His tenure will be judged not just by how he conducts elections but by whether he can rebuild faith in a system many Nigerians have grown to distrust.
