Atlanta United clinched a thrilling 2-1 playoff victory over Inter Miami with a last-minute goal on Saturday, dimming Lionel Messi’s quest for MLS Cup glory with the Florida club.

This dramatic goal levelled the best-of-three postseason series at 1-1, setting up a decisive third match in Miami next Saturday.

Inter Miami, the top seeds and 2-1 winners in the first game last week, appeared on track for a series win after taking the lead in the 40th minute.

Paraguay international David Martinez capitalized on a costly error from former U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who mishandled a routine clearance. Federico Redondo intercepted, passing to Martinez, who easily scored into an open net.

Atlanta responded with an aggressive second-half comeback, determined to keep their season alive. Their persistence paid off when Derrick Williams headed in an equalizer in the 58th minute.

The match continued with end-to-end action, with both teams pressing for a winner. In the 89th minute, Georgia international Saba Lobjanidze nearly gave Atlanta the lead, but Miami goalkeeper Drake Calendar tipped his shot onto the woodwork.

Just when it seemed penalties were inevitable, Atlanta launched one final attack. Aleksey Miranchuk set up Silva, who drilled the ball into the top corner, sealing the victory and igniting celebrations in Atlanta.

“Words can’t describe it, they’re such a resilient group,” Atlanta coach Rob Valentino said after the win.

“I said to the team before the game it’s everybody together, it’s not going to be one person. And then a substitute comes on and wins us the game.”
