  • Taiwo Awoniyi hailed Nottingham Forest’s escape from relegation despite his injury-stricken season.
  • The club faces financial woes and might need to offload key players to meet regulations.
  • Nonetheless, Awoniyi hinted at remaining with the team, showing appreciation for their collective resilience.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi described the recently concluded 2023/24 English Premier League season as ‘another year to remember’ following Nottingham Forest’s successful escape from relegation for the second consecutive year.

Editor’s Pick

Awoniyi came on as a late substitute in Nottingham Forest’s final game of the season against Burnley, which they won 2-1 with two first-half goals from Chris Wood.

Regardless of the outcome, their status would have remained unchanged, as Luton Town.

Who also faced a relegation battle on the last day, did not manage to defeat Fulham as expected.

The 26-year-old endured an injury-plagued season, limiting his contribution to just six goals and three assists in 20 games.

He missed 18 matches and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injuries. Despite these setbacks, he expressed gratitude to God for a successful season.

“After all is said and done. I’m who I am because of you (God). See you next season @premierleague,” the player wrote on Facebook.

“Another year to remember again. You deserve it, Nottingham Forest. Thanks for your support always and for helping us to push through.

“You truly the best, You RED,” he added.

Awoniyi in action for Nottingham Forest

Awoniyi’s message also hints that he might stay with Nottingham Forest or continue playing in the EPL next season.

The Nigerian is considered one of the players Nottingham Forest might be compelled to sell to avoid another Financial Fair Play breach.

Towards the end of the 2023/24 season, Forest received a four-point deduction for violating the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

According to the Premier League, the club admitted to exceeding their permitted threshold of £61 million by £34.5 million.

The club is at risk of breaching financial rules again next season if they don’t sell one of their top stars this summer.

As a result, Awoniyi has been identified as one of the key players that co-owner Evangelos Marinakis might be forced to sell ahead of next season.
