Democrats Drag Trump to Court Over New Election Rules in US

- Democrats sue Trump over a new executive order that requires proof of citizenship for voter registration and bans counting mail-in ballots arriving after Election Day.
- Legal experts and advocacy groups oppose the order, calling it an abuse of power that could prevent millions of Americans from voting.
- The order requires people to show proof of citizenship, suchas a passport, before they can register to vote. It also stops states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day.
The Democratic Party has taken legal action against former U.S. President Donald Trump’s new executive order, which introduces strict new voting rules.
The order requires people to show proof of citizenship, such as a passport, before they can register to vote. It also stops states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day.

In a lawsuit filed on Monday, the Democratic National Committee, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries argued that the order is illegal.
They said the president does not have the power to change election rules and that the new policies could prevent many eligible voters from casting their ballots.

After signing the order on March 25, called “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” Trump said it was the most significant executive action ever taken to secure U.S. elections.
Trump has long claimed, without evidence, that the U.S. electoral system is vulnerable to widespread fraud, especially with mail-in voting.
Legal experts and advocacy groups, including the Campaign Legal Center, have strongly opposed the order.
They argue that it is an abuse of power that could block millions of Americans from voting. Danielle Lang, a lawyer from the Campaign Legal Center, said, “It is simply not within the president’s authority to set election rules by executive decree, especially when they would restrict access to voting in this way.”
