Eko Hot Blog reports that the celebration featured a symbolic procession of the Kilajolu across key locations in the town, beginning with a visit to the palace of the Oloja of Epe Land, Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun, where the annual traditional rites were performed.
The monarch played a central role in the cultural observance, reinforcing the importance of preserving ancestral heritage.
The procession also moved to the police station, where the cultural display was extended in the presence of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), before continuing round the community. Residents trooped out in large numbers, joining the procession in a symbolic display of unity and historical remembrance.
A defining feature of the festival was the crowd carrying canes, symbolising the historical resistance and victories of the people in past conflicts, particularly the remembrance of the conquered slavery war and struggles of freedom.
Speaking on the significance of the festival, a community elder said, “This tradition reminds us of our strength, our survival, and the victories of our ancestors.”
Another participant noted that “the cane represents history, resistance, and the triumph of our people over oppression.”
A youth observer added that “it is important we continue this so the younger generation understands where we are coming from.”
The festival reaffirmed the cultural identity of Epe, blending history, tradition, and communal unity in a powerful annual observance.
