Unintentional Hardship Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said he has no intention to prune down the size of his cabinet.

Tinubu disclosed this in his first Presidential Media Chat on Monday.

This comes amid calls for the president to downsize his cabinet, which includes over 50 ministers.

However, while fielding questions during the media chat, Tinubu explained that the current structure was designed to ensure efficient governance for a large nation like Nigeria.

According to him, the country’s population of over 200 million requires a substantial number of officials to manage its affairs.

“I’m not prepared to bring down the number of my cabinet. I saw the need for them when I created the portfolio. Nigeria is a large country. If you are to entertain over 200 million persons, calculate how many stewards will be required,” the President said.

He added that efficiency was the driving force behind the cabinet’s formation, and he was not willing to shrink its size.

This comes as the president also stated that tax reform bills currently at the National Assembly have come to stay.

He has that he has no regrets for removing fuel subsidy in June 2023.

Tinubu reassured citizens that ongoing reforms were designed to foster growth rather than cause hardship. He highlighted the need for increased local production for consumption and export, noting that improved security would enable farmers to boost food production.

“We want this country to grow,” Tinubu said, emphasizing the need to incentivize local drug manufacturing and explore untapped potentials in various sectors.

On food security, Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s capacity to transform challenges into opportunities, stressing the importance of removing obstacles hindering progress.

Tinubu expressed confidence in his cabinet, dismissing suggestions to downsize or investigate its members. He urged Nigerians to acknowledge their efforts, adding, “The ministers are doing what they need to do.”
