Plateau Confirms Two Deaths from Suspected Lassa Fever Outbreak

The Plateau State Government has confirmed the deaths of two people following a suspected outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, disclosed this in Jos, stating that three cases have been recorded—two fatalities and one patient currently receiving treatment.
According to Shurkuk, the cases were identified in Kanam and Shendam Local Government Areas. One patient died in Shendam, while the survivor is being treated at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital.

Lassa fever, an acute viral haemorrhagic disease caused by the Lassa virus, spreads through food or household items contaminated by infected rat urine or feces. Symptoms include headache, sore throat, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.
In response, the Plateau State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has deployed a team to affected areas for assessment and public education.
