Protesters in Bangladesh have vandalized and set fire on the former family home of ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, along with residences belonging to other members of her party.
The violence erupted following news that Hasina, who has been in exile in India since student-led protests ousted her last year, planned to address the nation via social media.

The 77-year-old leader, who ruled Bangladesh for 20 years, was widely criticized for authoritarian governance, alleged election rigging, and suppressing dissent. Her government was accused of corruption and human rights abuses, leading to mass protests that forced her removal.
On Wednesday evening, demonstrators used an excavator to demolish the former home of Hasina’s late father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding president. The building had been converted into a museum. While Rahman is considered an independence hero, many of Hasina’s critics see her leadership as having tainted his legacy.
In a Facebook livestream, Hasina condemned the attack and called for “justice,” stating, “They can demolish a building, but they can’t erase history.”
Since Hasina’s ouster last August, anger against her and her Awami League party has persisted. On Wednesday, protesters also set fire to homes and businesses belonging to senior party leaders. Social media calls have urged the removal of what demonstrators describe as “pilgrimage sites of fascism.”
Authorities reported that around 700 protesters gathered at Hasina’s former residence, prompting a heavy police deployment.

Since Hasina’s removal, a caretaker government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has struggled to maintain stability amid ongoing unrest. Demonstrators have continued demanding Hasina’s prosecution for the deadly crackdown on last year’s student-led protests, which left hundreds dead.
Yunus’ administration is also facing economic challenges. He has accused Hasina’s government of fabricating Bangladesh’s economic growth and laundering billions of dollars. His government is pursuing Hasina’s extradition from India while also preparing for elections, expected in late 2025 or early 2026.
