Rivers: PDP Slams Fubara for Rejecting Party Control Offer Amid Internal Strife

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his complaints after he rejected an initial offer to manage the party’s machinery.

The PDP stated it had made several attempts to support the governor, but he failed to unite his fellow governors and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in his favor.

EKO HOT BLOG gathered that Ibrahim Abdulahi, the acting National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, told Tribune Online that when a vacancy arose for the chairman of the Rivers State chapter, the NWC requested that Fubara submit a nominee. However, he refused, insisting that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), should select the nominee instead.

The party spokesperson questioned Fubara’s sudden need to control the party structure in the state and denied any claims that the national leadership favored Wike over him.

When asked why the PDP did not support Governor Fubara in his conflict with Wike over control of the Rivers PDP, Abdulahi replied: “It’s a very long story that we cannot explain at this moment. The opportunities provided to Fubara by this party are unprecedented; no political party offers such to its members, not even to a governor or president.”

He emphasized that Fubara was given multiple chances to take charge of the party’s structure, including the opportunity to nominate a state chairman, but he deferred to Wike.

Abdulahi stated, “At what point did you stop recognizing him as your boss and start making those decisions on your own?”

The PDP spokesperson expressed disappointment with Fubara’s leadership, noting that his predecessor, Wike, effectively led the party during the Buhari administration while Fubara has struggled to gather support from his colleagues and the NWC.

“Fubara is in the same position now, yet he cannot rally his fellow governors or get the National Working Committee to support him, just because his predecessor is a minister in Abuja,” Abdulahi said.

He hinted that Fubara might face disciplinary action for alleged anti-party activities, including his reported sponsorship of another political party during the recent local government elections in Rivers State.

Abdulahi also mentioned that the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, might face similar consequences for attending the swearing-in ceremony of opposition local government officials in Rivers State.

“This is a clear case of anti-party activity on the part of the governor, and we will address it accordingly. The chairman of the governors’ forum attended the inauguration of officials who are not from the PDP, and that raises serious questions about loyalty to the party,” he said.

He warned that the PDP could lose control of Rivers State due to local councils being ceded to the Action Peoples Party (APP), but expressed confidence that the party would regain control by 2027.
